A little mushroom village in the hollow of a mossy stump right there on the trail—how could I resist?

This is the kind of spot where you can find SO MANY ants.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I bet! It was relatively close to this spot where I got my first decent shots of ants shepherding aphids last summer. Posted on my Pixelfed account, I think 🤔 Very cool insects, for sure 🐜

@nisemikol I'm imagining a tiny faerie society living in that mossy forest, imagining that the ring of stump around them is an impossibly high wall encircling the world.

@nisemikol The mushrooms are Lichenomphalia umbellifera. A lichen, actually. The algal component is tiny green bubbles on the wood surrounding the fruiting body.

@WWeeta@flipping.rocks incredible that you can ID from the photo! Is *L. umbellifera* that distinct, then?

@nisemikol
I wanna bring my party here and have lots of falling damage failing Acrobatics rolls as they fight a wood spirit.
@nisemikol A beautiful happenstance!
