@ozzelot@mstdn.social I haven't ever tried taking photos of a negative, but I suspect at least you'd want a lightbox (diffuse glass over a bulb) and a pretty firm tripod/mount setup.

I certainly would want those things! But vis a vis the optics, some people are like "don't bother with anything less than a full frame dslr and 1:1 macro" while other methodologies are like "you know that phone in your pocket? that. use that."

As with all these things I suspect the only way is to try.. but if there's such a thing as a cheap secondhand Epson scanner that might be an easier route. No idea what the market is like but I can thoroughly recommend the V500, just make sure it still has the film mounting holders that came with it.

can those holders perchance be 3d printed, or is that ill-advised (imperfections scratching the negatives, etc.?)

@ozzelot@mstdn.social No idea.. but I just had a quick look and it looks like you can pick up replacements on e.g. ebay so it's not the end of the world if they're missing.

The downside is, the V500 still seems to cost a lot, more than I remember paying for it new! I guess that means it's good, and there's demand.
