Here's a Black Kite exposing its nictitating membrane. This Black Kite was resting on top of a tree this morning. Almost didn't see it as we were driving fast, so I had to do a double look or I would have totally missed this amazing opportunity to capture it. Bird photography is being on the right time, right place, right weather, right sunlight, right everything lol.

@crimsonbutterfly What an amazing capture! 🤩 May I ask what mm focal length you used?

I've only ever seen them flying and I struggle so much to get a photo of them. We have a family of them (Not entirely sure if its Black kites or Common buzzard tbh) in a nearby tree, so I'll keep trying :)

@hejchristian@front-end.social 300mm. I took this shot in Westerm Treatment Plant in Vic, Australia. Its the second birding hotspot in the country. We get so many raptors there. You should come one time!

This bird didn't mind me at all. Whereabouts are you based? That would be a good indicator to decide what bird you saw.

@crimsonbutterfly Nice! It's cool to learn what focal ranges are used as I practice more, thanks.

I'm in Portugal - but in the past two weeks or so I've identified what I thought was the same bird, but then when I submitted it to iNaturalist, it's been ID'd and confirmed by other folks as two different species 😅 But I've seen both from my garden so not sure which family is living up in the tree. I might have to try to get a bit closer one day to have a look (not to disturb them though)

@hejchristian@front-end.social Tail is a good indicator if youre trying to identify both. Do you use merlin? You can upload photos there and it can identify species with some degrees of accuracy.

@crimsonbutterfly I have the app but don't use it enough, tbh I forgot it could even do photo identification 🤦 I've only used it for audio. thanks for the tips!
