A quiet piece of history with this Gedenkstein (memorial stone) tucked away in the greenery of the Schlossberg. The rough-hewn, blue-grey rock features a large, ornate bronze coat of arms belonging to the Austrian state of Carinthia (Kärnten), easily recognized by its three lions. Next to it, a gold plaque explains its purpose: it commemorates the Kärntner Abwehrkampf (Carinthian Defensive Struggle) of 1918–1920 and the historic plebiscite on October 10, 1920, when the region voted to remain part of Austria rather than joining the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Erected in 1980 by the Carinthian community in Graz, the monument sits peacefully on the grass, framed by mature trees with a glimpse of the city in the background, offering a solemn reminder of post-WWI border conflicts amidst the park's calm.

On August 6th, 2022, mum and I visited Graz. We took the Schloßbergbahn to go up, as mum could not climb the Kriegersteig (unfortunately). We explored the Castle Hill, where I spotted this memorial stone.
