One of the things in Portugal I really had to get used to. Discarded shoes are everywhere. It's nearly impossible to have a walk and not find at least one shoe.

@jonlord@mastodon.world Well, one of the reasons - I've been told - is because many people when they throw away their shoes, they hope/assume that someone else - like a homeless - may have a need for them. So, they don't throw them in the appropriate container, but leave them on the street for easy access instead.

Thanks for the explanation - also always wondered why trainers tied together get thrown on overhead cables in the US ?
An athletic statement ?

@jonlord@mastodon.world Tied trainers, not only in the US. Over here too, I have a vague recollection that someone told me years ago, it originally had to do with the end of a school year, but I'm not at all sure about that ;-
